Jean Alicia Elster is the narrator for the Marion Hayden Legacy Ensemble’s performance of “Up South: Reflections of the Great Migration” at the Kerrytown Concert House-Along the Road to Freedom Project. Reading from her award-winning historical fiction trilogy that is based upon her maternal family history—WHO’S JIM HINES?, THE COLORED CAR and HOW IT HAPPENS (Wayne State University Press)—Elster provides historical context to the musical selections. Led by internationally acclaimed jazz bassist and 2025 Kresge Eminent Artist Marion Hayden, a select group of Detroit-based musicians will provide the musical backdrop for this exciting creative collaboration.
